Chapter 6 - Building Your Connected Learning Community

In chapter 6 of the book titled “Developing a Connected Learning Model”, it discusses how to begin your very own learning system and the diverse part of things that you must think about when making an individual learning system. Understanding how different types of platforms work and what they are intended for is one of the main elements you should embrace before knowing who your audience is when trying to connect with others. A platform such as LinkedIn can be a very helpful in trying to build your career or look for your future job. LinkedIn is the place to be, when it comes to connecting with the right people and looking for the right job in your field. When following a specific people on any platform it is important to look through their bio and experience to see if they will be a good match for you. The book suggests condoning a background check before you follow a person to make sure they are really who they say they are.

I plan to apply for cyber security or computer networking positions when I graduate. In order to showcase my knowledge and skills I acquired in school, I plan to connect with people and companies who interest my type of field work. In order to do so, I must connect with individuals or companies on LinkedIn who fit my future career criteria. Through personal experience, I know how important it is to have connections or know someone to get your foot in the door as far as a job goes. This chapter showcases that by making sure you are networking with the right people. With my major being Computer Science and Info Systems, I must always be willing to learn and adapt to new technology coming out. I can do this by following individuals or companies who are up and rising in my field. It is recommended to advertise on all your social media platforms because that is the foundation to your job or future career. The author Sheryl makes a valid point when she states that you should be adding value to your network in order to have an online presence. As of now, I’m still in the learning process of creating a online presence that will help me succeed in the future.

My question to my fellow classmates is, what social media platform do you use to network with and what benefits do you get out of it?

  1. Hello MD,

I utilize LinkedIn to network with my classmates, coworkers, managers, and other people I know. I find that platform is a great and easy way to make meaningful connects with other professionals also while marketing your own skills, achievements, and experiences. LinkedIn also allows for the users to share and write articles, which can make a profile more appealing for employers. LinkedIn also helps employers find your profile and engage with you, if they are looking to hire. I believe that LinkedIn, will be a great platform to get your foot in the door, through these great connections that it allows you to make.
